The first stars & stripes were sewn by Elizabeth Ross of Philadelphia from a design by Francis Hopkinson, a member of the Continental Congress. This was not originally a flag but appeared as a political cartoon before the Revolution. It first appeared in Ben Franklin's newspaper in May, 1754 and spread to other newspapers.
This flag was presented by George Washington and Massachusetts Governor John Hancock to the only all black military unit of the American revolution.
